Top New Year's Eve Events in West Maui
November 21st, 2018
When you close your eyes and picture Maui what do you see? Many people think of the white sand beaches, the turquoise waters and that feeling of finally being relaxed. It's true, all of these items are pure Maui - but one of Maui's better kept secrets? The nightlife paradise that comes alive, especially on memorable nights like Halloween and New Year's Eve.
There is a New Year's Eve event for every taste on West Maui, whether you're looking for an elegant night of dancing and sipping champagne on a cruise ship, or you want to take the kids to a spectacular firework show. Here are our top picks for the best New Year's Eve events on West Maui.
#1 - New Year's Eve Fireworks
Each New Year's Eve in Maui, Wilea offers a spectacular fireworks display. Wilea is in South Maui, about 45 minutes from Lahaina. We suggest either grabbing dinner in South Maui and then catching the fireworks display in Wilea, or taking part in the self-hosted fireworks displays along the beaches in West Maui.
Residents and visitors usually set off their own fireworks along the beaches of Ka'anapali in West Maui. Bring some snacks, a blanket and some sparklers to the beaches of Ka'anapali and prepare for an evening of spontaneous fun. The best part about this plan is that you can bounce around from beach to bar and then walk back to your condo after a night of celebration.
#2 - Fireworks & Champagne Cruise
Take a New Year’s Eve fireworks cruise. The following companies are advertising special New Year’s Eve cruises to include fireworks views. Fireworks displays may be formal and hosted by a resort or they could be informal hosted by local families. If you are interested in one of theses cruises, you should book as soon as possible as many of them sell out every year.
- Pacific Whale Foundation is offering a number of New Year’s Eve cocktail cruises that depart from Ma’alaea and Lahaina harbors. Lahaina Harbor is closer to the West Maui resorts, but parking in Lahaina can be challenging to find at times. Ma’alaea Harbor is closer to Wailea than Lahaina, but parking is much easier, in the large parking lot by the Maui Ocean Center. When checking availability, make sure that you are choosing the date of 12/31/2018 as their booking engine sometimes automatically advances the cruise into the next year of availability when a particular cruise is sold out. See a listing of their special New Year’s Eve cruises.
- SOLD OUT: Pride of Maui offers a New Year’s Eve cruise for $149 per person. We have been on a sunset dinner sail with Pride of Maui and they do a nice job.
- SOLD OUT: Trilogy has an adults-only New Year’s Eve fireworks cruise with food and drink for $249. They limit to 40 guests.
- Alii Nui’s has an adults-only New Year’s Eve fireworks cruise with food and drink. It’s pricy at $299 per person, but it does include transportation from most hotels to and from the cruise harbor, which is very convenient for this holiday. We have taken one of their snorkel cruises and they do a nice job.
Looking for a "cruise" on land? Take a trip on the Sugar Cane Train! The Holiday Express runs from now through December 31 and is a wonderful 4-mile trip for the whole family.
#3 - Traditional Luau with Fire
When in Maui! Immerse yourself in local culture with a traditional Luau to celebrate the New Year. Drums of the Pacific is an authentic Polynesian show offering a traditional imu ceremony and a wonderful dinner menu. When you enter the celebration, you'll be greeted with a Lei and an island beverage. There will be traditional dance performances and a torch lighting.
You can feast on an excellent spread of Polynesian specialties, and even learn the Hula. To top it all off, there is an open bar. Be sure to reserve your condo in Ka'anapali so you can walk back to your private abode after a big night of celebration.
#4 - Fleetwood's on Front Street
Fleetwood's on Front Street is a legendary restaurant and entertainment venue all on its own, add in New Year's Eve and you have a winning combination. If the name Fleetwood's on Front Street sounds farmiliar, it's because Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac owns the place.
He usually comes back every year to perform on New Year's Eve for a can't miss intimate evening event. Tickets are pricey, but include a cocktail reception, appetizers and a midnight champagne toast with Mick himself. Be sure to reserve your Lahaina vacation rental, so you can walk back to your private condo after a night of dancing and drinks.
